Sheffield Eagles RLFC may finally have a stadium to call their home after a move to the Olympic Legacy Park for 2018 is edging closer to being complete.

If you didn't know, Sheffield Eagles, a semi-professional rugby league team, had been left without a permanent home since leaving Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park at the end of 2016. The South Yorkshire outfit had a brief spell at Wakefield’s Belle Vue during 2017.

Belle Vue became the Eagles' temporary home in 2017

But all that now seems to be behind the club, who can finally move forward with their development. Eagles Chairman Chris Noble MBE is optimistic, having outlined the club’s priorities:

“The main aim at the moment is to ensure we have a playing venue back in Sheffield and a stadium at the Olympic Legacy Park so Sheffield Eagles finally has a home. Once we have this, we can then start putting plans in place for the future.”

The decision to use Wakefield’s Belle Vue stadium during 2017 was not straight forward, with cutbacks needed to be taken to ensure the Eagles moved forward:

“We have reduced staff numbers to just Mark Aston as Head Coach and Liam Claffey as General Manager, between the three of us, we run the club.”

Another major decision was the one to revert Sheffield Eagles back to a part-time club, which the Chairman declared was the only option open to the club:

“Our aims are to stabilise the club, remain in the Championship (Tier 2) and move back to Sheffield in 2018. If we achieve those three aims it will have been a successful year in our eyes. We can then turn to ensuring we have a stadium we can call our own and build for a future which could take us into Super League.”

With all the adversity faced by the club in the past few years, Mr. Noble hasn’t given up hope of Sheffield Eagles once again being a club to be reckoned with. The 1998 Challenge Cup Winners will definitely be a side to watch in the years to come. Watch this space!
