It's fair to say that people from Sheffield are extremely friendly and will make conversation with anyone!
However, if you're new to the city and aren't quite down with all our Northern slang, maintaining any conversation could be quite difficult.

We've made a list of the basics you'll need in order to have a proper convo with Sheffield folk!
1. EYUP
(AY UP)
Eyup is a way of saying Hello/Hiya. Pretty basic really... And if you didn't know that already, what on earth did you think our site name meant?
2. OWZ THA DOIN?
Eyup is often followed by "owz tha doin?" Which means, How are you?
See this isn't so hard after all...
3. LOVE
"Cheers Love!"
Don't worry no ones making a move on you (well they could be), but It's just a friendly term.
4. BE REYT
(BE RATE)
'It will be okay.'
A statement often used when we know it will probably not be ok. But we're Nothern folk! We carry on regardless.
5. SNAP
Snap = Food. Not the card game.
6. BREADCAKE
If you do ever go for food while in Sheffield, sandwiches come on breadcakes. Not baps or buns or bread rolls and NEVER barm cakes. Do not insult us with your strange words.

7. A SE!
(A SAY)
OI! or Excuse me!
8. YOU AVIN A TIN BATH?!
Quite an odd one, but this one means "are you joking/kidding?"
It originates from Cockey rhyming slang but is commonly used here too.
9. DEE DAR
People outside of Sheffield often refer to us a Dee Dars, apparently because we always put a 'D' at the start of our words? For example Dat = that. You can make your own mind up on this one...
10. SI THI
(SEE THEE)
And finally to end the wonderful conversation, Si thi' is a northerners 'goodbye'. Ta'ra can also be used.
