5 Sheffield Sports Teams You Definitely Need To Watch!

As we all know, sport is very much embedded into cities and countries all over the globe. Sports teams bring hope, joy, admiration and excitement to many towns and cities - with many places being put on the map because of the success of their sports teams.
With that being said, the City of Sheffield is home to many successful sports teams rich in history and heritage, here are five teams to definitely watch perform at some point:
Sheffield United (Football)

The red and white footballing part of Sheffield. Sheffield United, nicknamed 'The Blades', have recently been promoted to the Championship and currently sit third in the table, vying for a play-off spot to gain a place in the Premier League.
Based in the City Centre at their home Brammall Lane, one of the oldest stadiums in the UK, United are known to play entertaining football and have some very passionate fans.
Their rendition of 'Greasy Chip Butty' to the tune of Annie's Song is enough to send shivers down your spine... a must see!
Sheffield Wednesday (Football)

And now for the blue and white part of the city. Sheffield Wednesday, or 'The Owls', are another Championship football team and, of course, arch rivals to Sheffield United. The two have a long history.
Playing their home games on the outskirts of Sheffield at Hillsborough Stadium, Wednesday have flirted with gaining promotion back to the Premier League for many seasons, and will hope to one-up Sheffield United as both teams strive to finish higher in the table than the other.

Sheffield Eagles RLFC (Rugby League)

Moving onto rugby now and we have the Sheffield Eagles, the pride and joy of South Yorkshire rugby league!
The Eagles currently play their matches in the Championship and have recently unveiled a new stadium, the Olympic Legacy Park, where they will play during the 2018 season.
The prestigious Challenge Cup trophy, dubbed the most illustrious competition in all of rugby league, was won by Sheffield Eagles in 1998, after they stunned the form books to beat Wigan Warriors in a fairytale final.
Sheffield Steelers (Ice Hockey)

Ice Hockey in Sheffield? You got it! The Sheffield Steelers are one of the best teams that British Ice Hockey has to offer.
The sport of ice hockey includes skill, amazing crowds and toughness - what more could you want! The Steelers play their home games at Sheffield Arena and have made it a fortress over the years.
The Steelers have won nine league titles and ten Play-Off Championships - making them one of the most decorated teams in British Ice Hockey. Fun for everyone!
Also on the ice hockey front, both Universities - The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University - play in an annual Varsity Ice Hockey match which produces big crowds and a rivalry not many cities can manage to create.
Sheffield Sharks (Basketball)

And finally, the Sheffield Sharks. The 2015/2016 Play-Off winners are another fantastic club that makes Sheffield such a great sporting city.
Playing there home games at the Sheffield Institute of Sport, the Sharks pride themselves on their youth teams and community work, showing just how important participation is to sport.
