Sheffield shoppers have voiced their concern over what has been described as 'swarms' of pigeons gathering at the busy Moor Market shopping street.

Pigeons feeding on leftover scraps

Many shoppers have pointed the fingers at other visitors who leave behind crumbs and other scraps from the many food outlets in the area.

The worst affected area appears to be towards the bottom of the moor where hundreds can gather around Subway, Crashaws Greggs and the Pound Bakery.

Megan Cooper, out shopping for Christmas presents said it's becoming a major issue.

"The council need to act, it makes the city look dirty and I can imagine it puts people off coming down here to shop."

The shopping precinct has only recently undergone a huge £8m overhaul in order to put it on level standards with the rest of the 'new' city centre but Alan Peterson who's lived in Sheffield all of his life thinks this could change should the council fail to act.

"All the work that’s been put into the area over the past few years but they won't spend a bit of money to get rid of some birds, ridiculous."

It's not just a nuisance they are causing either; Jackie Hall a nurse from Sheffield said that pigeons do carry diseases.

"There are 3 Known diseases associated with pigeon droppings that can affect humans, Histoplasmosis, Crycroccosis and Psittacosis."

She did add that the chances are small despite the risk being there.

"However the chances of this are minimal as humans would have to be in close contact with the pigeon's droppings."

Sheffield Council has asked for concerns on the birds to be voiced.

A spokesperson for the council said no official complaints have been launched.
