Sheffield city council’s aims to increase the number of cyclists and pedestrians in the city by creating a 700m walking and cycling route stretching between the city centre and the university of Sheffield.

The overall aim is to reduce any traffic congestion in what is currently a busy area which in turn will improve air quality by reducing air and sound pollution in the city.

David Ramsden, a spokesperson for the council claims the proposed works will improve upon already existing development in the area, giving pedestrians the priority while also considering continued access for all road users.

“Major improvements for cyclists have already been made to part of this route, we would like to continue this work and give access to the heart of the city”

The work will involve a change of layout for Portabello, a cycle lane will be introduced giving motorised traffic a lower priority in the area. Cyclists will now be able to travel in both directions while vehicles will only travel one way.

Trippet Lane will also see some redevelopment, along with Pinfold and Rockingham street it will be made one way for motorised vehicles and a narrow central carriageway for motorised traffic.

Pedestrians have also been considered with the proposals for raised vehicle crossings allowing a much safer environment for those who chose to walk.

Ryan Levell, a student who cycles to university says that cycling to and from university has allowed him to save money by avoiding expensive parking costs.

“It’s nice that us cyclists are being considered by the council, it’s too expensive to park my car around here so cycling was a much cheaper alternative for commuting to and from uni”

The proposals also include consideration for cafes and pubs in the area to use certain areas for outdoor seating or planting in an aim to make the environment more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists.

There is yet to be a date set for when the work will be taking place.
