Local landscaper hopes to warn public about the risk of rogue traders and how to prevent being caught out.

Andrew James, 51 of Langsett Avenue has been working in the trade for many years, but over the past year has seen a rise in the number of cowboy builders who are ripping off clients for money or providing poor quality work.

After recently giving a client a quotation of around £1500, but being knocked back because she had previously had a quote of £6000 and was worried about the quality of their work, Andrew decided he had to do something to make people more aware.

"I couldn't believe it. £6000 was ridiculous but she was ready to pay that. I sat down and broke the cost down so she could see how much it should really cost and she was speechless. I'm an honest man and could never rip anyone off but people out there will and we need to know how to spot them."

He since has been offering free quotations and advice for anyone who should want them.

"It is important you do your research before getting any work done in and around your home. Ask friends and family for recommendations, get a few quotes to compare and try if you can to research the cost for yourself."

Although he acknowledges this isn't always easy for some individuals he does suggest that we should try and look out for members of the community who are more vulnerable.

More often than not, those who are often older and alone are the victims. According to Citizens Advice, last year they were contacted more than 40,000 about home disasters, two thirds of which were conducted by rogue traders which emphasises just how serious an issue this is.
